Burt National Drrecfm October 6, 1980 David H. Koch 200 Central Park SOuth Apt. 25?0 New York, NY 10019 Dear David: After all you've done for the campaign this year, I'm almost embarrassed to ask you to consider con- tributing to another important Libertarian campaign, one that looks like a winner in southern California. And yet I feel you'd want to make sure that we don't miss the boat on this one. To make a long story short, $20,000 is what stands between us and electing Roberta Rinehart, a very credible, attractive Libertarian, to the California Assembly. You know the huge strides we've made in Alaska, with a $250 million income tax repeal under our belt. Then imagine electing a Libertarian to the California legislature--that ?great stage" of politics in the nation's largest state. Roberta is electable--indeed, she's running neck and neck and we expect her to win provided she has the money to pay for a massive mailing to the 100,000 registered households in her district. She has already raised several thousand dollars for her race locally, and will be raising an additional $5,000 or so locally for a last minute targeted mailing. I have worked with her campalgn managers--the same people who spearheaded California's success ful ballot access drive-?to uarantee that Roberta has hun dreds of volunteers on the street for her. And she does. All of the elements of a win a $20,000 needed to pay for?? mailing to the I'd like to ask re here except the . . general get-out?the vote district as a whole. This is the amount you to contribute, either through the .. .- - a- ?w .- October 6, 1980 Libertarian National Committee or directly to the Rinehart for Assembly Campaign. Contributions from sources outside California, and even from corporations, are quite legal under California law. and I can produce a legal opinion by attorney Ray Hendrickson verifying this if necessary. As we recently discussed, the Libertarian Party has other big ?winning" races this year, too. But aSide from the Alaska Libertarians' House races?-for whom we recently raised several thousand dollars--there is no other state-level race as important in terms of w1nnability and impact as the Rinehart campaign. I strongly urge your support, and encourage you to talk with Dallas Cooley, Chris Hooker, or Roberta Rinehart should you wish to verify my impressions of this exciting opportunity. I've enclosed details about the campaign, and of course I remain at your disposal to answer any questions you might have. Thanks for considering this urgent request. For?yiberty, Wil;;:m D.
