The Review Board for the Diocese of Sioux City met on Monday, February 5, 2018 and discussed Fr. Jerry Cayle's living situation. It was the consensus of the Review Board that he should pursue securing residence in a Nursing Home/Senior Living Center that could admit him to its Assisted living facilities. This recommendation is based on two major considerations. First, having moved to the Albuquerque area for treatment in 1986, he has now lived there for over 30 years, has acclimated to the climate of that area, and all the components of his "support system" (including you) are there. If Fr. Coyle were to move back to Iowa, it would require a complete rebuilding of his network of iriends and associates, as well as a dramatic readjustment to the climate. Neither of which is impossible, but for an 84-yearrold man, such a move would inevitably be physically and emotionally very difficult. Secondly, of greater concern to the Review Board was Fr. Coyle's self- revealed history of sexual attraction to and contact with boys. when he Seifrreported his situation to then Bishop Soens and asked for help, Fr. Coyle admitted that, for a period of about 20 years, he victimized approximately 50 school boys, varying from to 10'" grade. It is now estimated that those same men would range in age from 45 to 70 sum 0"me shown (me- 17m 72:75.57 Page 2 years. There is great concern that should Fr. Coyle return to the Diocese, that one or more of these men could potentially encounter him and be retraumatized by the memories that would surface. The Review Board is grateful to you and your family for your kindness and the Christ-like attention and care you have provided Fr. Coyle, most notably your willingness to welcome him into your home following his traffic accident. While acknowledging the grace of Fr. Coyle?s repentance and the 30 plus years of apparent success he has experienced in living out celibate chastity since moving to the Albuquerque area, the Review Board cannot condone the risk you take by allowing Fr. Coyle to reside in your home and recommends in the strongest of terms that the best form of assistance you can provide Fr. Coyle would be to help him find an institution with Assisted Living facilities that would accept him and provide the oversight and living services that he is going to need as he continues to age. What the Diocese is prepared to do for Fr. Coyle is to raise his assistance allowance from $1000 to $1575. It is hoped that, in addition to Social Security and Medicaid, this increased allowance would be sufficient for him to afford the cost of living in an institution which provides Assisted Living housing. I am sending essentially this same letter and message to Fr. Coyle. After you have discussed this with him, I would be grateful if you would inform me of what you decide to do regarding his housing. Sincerely yours in Christ our Lord, Fr. Bradley C. Pelzel Vicar General Diocese of Sioux City cc Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless, Bishop of Sioux City 182lJackson Street 1' RC.
