Principal Sellers has not relayed the vote tally taken on the decision or the age group of those approved to read the book, as requested. As to whether Ms. Sellers noti?ed the media of my objection to the book, here is my documentation of what Julie Ball told me on the phone on May 1, 2015 around 4:30pm: Ms. Ball said that the principal of Reynolds sent "noti?cation" to her of my objection to The Kite Runner. Ms. Ball used the word "noti?cation" and she repeated the sentence to me, probably because I was too surprised to speak. Ms. Ball asked me if I had seen "the email". When I didn't have the computer on, she began to describe the gist of the email from Ms. Sellers, sent about an hour earlier. In fact, it sounded like she also received my con?dential objection form. If Ms. Ball's statement was true, this would be a case of the principal bullying a parent. Parent intimidation is a serious charge. As superintendent, will you thoroughly investigate? I have copied Mr. Awtry and previously asked him to investigate from his end. I don't know why Ms. Ball would tell me this if it was not true. Of course, this is a possibility. Ms. Sellers has chosen to ignore my requests for clari?cation. I have the videotape of our meeting where we discussed 'The Kite Runner' after I received the opt out form: 1)Why was I told that the book hadn't been taught at ACRHS before? The media reported that the book had been taught for several years there. 2) Why did the teacher say she had to "wait for approval" of the book, so parents weren't informed until a week before the class? The media reported the book had been on the approved list for years. 3) My two questions from May 13, 2015 listed in the ?rst paragraph above. Please consider all above questions a* public records request. *Most importantly, will policy change and permission slips 0r "opt-in" forms be sent home when books with mature adult sexual content are to be read and discussed in class? I was a bit confused when you said you didn't contact the media. This was in direct contradiction of what the Asheville Citizen-Times reporter, Julie Ball told me. When Julie Ball called me on Friday May 1, 2015 around 4:30pm, she immediately introduced herself and said she had received "noti?cation" from you about the objection form I ?led (per school board policy 3210). Ms. Ball even repeated this because I was, frankly, too surprised to speak. I felt that my con?dence had been betrayed and that she was actually sent a copy of the con?dential objection form I had ?lled out. Did she receive this? Ms. Ball proceeded to describe an email that she was sent announcing the suspension of 'The Kite Runner'. I was not at my computer so I had not 1:56:23 checked my email. Later, I saw that you sent an email to me at 3:30pm and it was as Ms. Ball described. Ms. Ball's use of the word "noti?cation" means something that gives of?cial information to someone the act of notifying someone" and is synonymous with "announcement". It sounded to me like a press release had gone out to the media. Did this happen? As you probably know, it was the Asheville Citizen-Times story which Ms. Ball posted on the evening of May 1, 2015 that was picked up by the Associated Press. The article started a media "domino effect". I was then contacted by WLOS and FoxCarolina. Both news agencies mentioned the Citizen-Times article as the reason they wanted to interview me and the school administration. Is it a common practice to announce to media when parents share concerns about classroom materials? It seems to me to be a form of intimidation or bullying. I certainly hope this was not the intention. I have documented the series of events that began when I received the opt-out letter and contacted Ms. Bowman for a meeting. I sent you the summary and asked you specifically for any corrections/clari?cations. You made no corrections to the details of our meeting so I posted the summary on 1 also sent the questions below to you twice the highlighted ones below remain unanswered: 1. Thank you for suspending the questionable novel although the committee has not yet reviewed the book. Their decision may or may not lead to an appeal. I am sure the timing was the issue since the study of the book was to begin today. 2. Thank you for the information per my inquiry about 'The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian'. According to the ALA, in 2014 this was the number one book challenged by parents for its content. I read the book last year when my son remarked that he didn't care for it. It was quite shocking when I compared it to the innocuous description on his summer reading list. I am surprised that it is now a book considered for classroom instruction. 3. Please let me know the outcome of your follow-up of my request for parent opt-in forms (permission slips) for controversial books to be studied. I hope the entire school district will adopt this policy. This is merely practicing due diligence to ensure parents have read the books' description. Of course, I would expect that full disclosure of all mature adult themes will accompany the permission form. 4. I am confused about the timeline for approval of 'The Kite Runner' for my son's class. During our meeting, the teacher said she didn't explain the curriculum change at open house or on her webpage because she was "waiting for approval". I believe you are saying that the book had been approved some time ago. Help me understand the discrepancy in statements. Also, why did WLOS report that the book had been studied at Reynolds for several years? If this was incorrect, did you report the inaccuracy to 5. Is the building level Media Technology Advisory committee meeting an open or closed meeting? It sounds like I would not be able to speak at the 5 1:56:23 meeting, but can I attend? 6. I am curious, in the past has the class read the entire book or just excerpts from All Quiet on the Western Front? 7. Was it accurate for WLOS to call your suspension of the novel a "book ban"? I had told the reporter it was a suspension and that students could still read the book in the library. Is this correct? If so, did you send a correction to I look forward to hearing from you today regarding the decision made by the ACRHS Media and Technology Committee and hopefully, receive the answers to the above questions. For what age group is the book approved? 2) Will the book be used in Ms. Bowman's class during the 10 day period when I can consider appealing the decision? If so, what is the alternative plan for my son? We did not solidify this as you said, "There is no need for the alternative assignment for Will in English II Honors. The error is reported by the recipient's email system, but most often it must be ?xed by the sender. An example is when the recipient changes their email address but the sender selects the person from the recipient AutoComplete list, which has the out?of?date email address information. Sometimes it needs to be ?xed by the recipient or the recipient's email admin, for example, when the recipient has created a mail forwarding rule to an incorrect address, or if there's a problem with their email address directory. I was a bit confused when you said you didn't contact the media. This was in direct contradiction of what the Asheville Citizen?Times reporter, Julie Ball told me. I was not at my computer so I had not checked my email. I sent you the summary and asked you speci?cally for any corrections/clari?cations. You made no corrections to the details of our meeting so I posted the summary on I also sent the questions below to you twice the highlighted ones below remain unanswered: 1. Thank you for suspending the questionable novel although the committee has not yet reviewed the book. Their decision may or may not lead to an appeal. I am sure the timing was the issue since the study of the book was 1/201 5 1:56:23 to begin today. 2. Thank you for the information per my inquiry about 'The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian'. According to the ALA, in 2014 this was the number one book challenged by parents for its content. I read the book last year when my son remarked that he didn?t care for it. This is merely practicing due diligence to ensure parents have read the books? description. Of course, I would expect that full disclosure of all mature adult themes will accompany the permission form. 4. am confused about the timeline for approval of 'The Kite Runner' for my son's class. It sounds like I would not be able to speak at the meeting, but can I attend? 6. I am curious, in the past has the class read the entire book or just excerpts from All Quiet on the Western Front? 7. Was it accurate for WLOS to call your suspension of the novel a "book ban?? I had told the reporter it was a suspension and that students could still read the book in the library. Is this correct? If so, did you send a correction to I look forward to hearing from you today regarding the decision made by the ACRHS Media and Technology Committee and hopefully, receive the answers to the above questions. I am having a spirited debate with our English Language Arts Department (Middle School) about what constitutes Historical Fiction. Our ELA folks say a book can be considered Historical Fiction only if it refers to a real person, battle, or event. I say a book can be considered Historical Fiction if the story takes place during a historical time, regardless of whether or not real persons or events take place. By my de?nition, Great Gatsby and To Kill a Mockingbird are Historical Fiction because they take place in a different era than the present day. The ELA folks disagree because of the lack of real people and events in those titles. What say you, smart people? Bragging rights or egg on my face are riding on this! an Jan Birney, MLS, LMS Jockey Hollow Middle School 365 Fan Hill Rd Monroe, CT 06468 203-452-2905 Ext 6339 -l-II-D-nn-Dulu-w-I Please note: All postings are protected by copyright law.
